Discussion on the “Waste Management Policy in Armenia” Program

Hovhannes Martirosyan, Head of the Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body, received Harutyun Alpetian, Program Manager of the “Waste Management Policy in Armenia” program at the Acopian Center for Environment of the American University of Armenia.

The meeting was attended by Vrej Galoyan, Deputy Head of the Inspection Body, sectoral officials, and representatives of the Acopian Center for Environment of AUA.

During the discussion, the program manager presented the legislative package developed for the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system and the draft law on “Extended Producer Responsibility in Armenia.” The conversation also covered the main directions of the program, including the introduction of waste sorting systems in Sevan and several communities, as well as the development of sectoral capacities.

The Head of the Inspection Body emphasized the role of supervisory authorities in the proper implementation of the EPR system, noting that the new approaches will increase regulatory efficiency and reduce negative environmental impacts.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties clarified possible forms of cooperation and joint work in public awareness campaigns.
