For the first time, the environmental impact of inactive tailings facilities has been studied. Out of 22 tailings facilities in Armenia, 7 are currently operational, while 9 still need to be brought to a safe condition.
Laboratory studies have shown that there is no highly dangerous or emergency situation.
In 2017, by a decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the procedure for the inventory of closed mining waste facilities was approved.
The Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body has the necessary professional capacity and technical resources to carry out a more accurate assessment of this infrastructure.
The first step toward addressing the issue of tailings facilities has been taken. The conducted studies will serve as a basis for the work of a future working group, which will implement further steps.
